What gets exposed when production accelerates.
The work looks considered. I am not yet sure it is.
There is a kind of project I have been close to a lot this spring. A website near the end of its build. A brand system that came together quickly. A team moving faster than I have seen teams this size move before. Investor conversations sharpening. The work clearing milestones the calendar did not predict.
I am, on most days, pleased with it.
I am also not certain we have told the right story yet. I am not certain the experience is truly seamless. The work looks considered. I am not yet sure it is considered.
Can we still tell if the work is good?
The question is no longer whether the work is good. It is whether we can still tell.
For a long time, most of the energy in a project of this shape went into what do we make. Most of the hours, most of the friction, most of the disagreement. You could not really avoid the work of considering the experience, because the experience could not exist without weeks of considering.
That bottleneck is gone. The artifacts arrive earlier now. They arrive more polished. They arrive in a state that invites agreement before they have earned it. The team feels further along than it is.
Three places it shows.
The first is the category. A wave of AI infrastructure companies have launched brand identities in the last twelve months, and most of them look like each other. Gradient backgrounds. Custom geometric mark. Condensed sans serif. Dark mode. A tagline somewhere in the neighborhood of humans deserve better. Strip the names off and you would have a hard time telling six of them apart.
This is what happens when nobody holds the question open long enough. The tools resolve fast. They resolve toward their own defaults. And the defaults of the tools become the defaults of the category.
The second place is the investor deck. Every founder now has a Claude artifact or some equivalent, and the output is fine. Often more than fine. Slick is free.
Which means slick no longer signals anything. The deck that used to read as this team has design sense now reads as this team has access to the same tools as everyone else. The signal has flipped quietly. A less polished deck with clear thinking is, right now, more credible than a beautiful one, because the beautiful one is no longer evidence of anything.
The third place is the market. “Looks fine” used to be a real achievement. It was the ceiling for most companies’ design budgets and the floor for any agency wanting to keep clients. That whole layer is collapsing. The companies that needed only “looks fine” do not need the people who used to provide it. The companies that need real craft need it more, because everyone else’s competent work now reads as floor, not ceiling.
This is a redistribution, not a tragedy. But it is real, and it is happening fast.
The risk and the opportunity are the same shift.
The same shift that creates the risk creates the opportunity, viewed from different distances.
The risk is that the how quietly muddies the what and the why. Production gets faster, artifacts arrive more resolved, the room is happier earlier, and the considering never happens. The polish substitutes for the thinking. The signal substitutes for the substance.
The opportunity is the opposite. For most of my career, the production weight of a launch consumed the hours that should have gone to the work before the work. Weeks spent making the thing, days left to actually figure out what it should be. That ratio is inverting. The hours that used to belong to production are coming back. They can finally go to the part of the work that always mattered most. Not the making and not the approving. The space between. The willingness to hold a question open before deciding what it is.
Most of the work I admire is built on that space. Someone refusing to resolve too early. Someone protecting ambiguity past the point where it would have been easy to close it. The new economy of speed makes that space more available than it has been in a long time, and also makes it easier to skip.
The harder discipline is the comfort with ambiguity. The willingness to keep the question open while the tools are pressing toward an answer.
Whether the shift plays out as risk or opportunity is not a question about the tools. It is a question about whether someone is holding the question of what we are making with the same intent we used to hold the making itself.
The work is choosing where to slow down.
The hours come back. The question is what we do with them.
The temptation is to use them the way we used to: spread evenly across the work, applied wherever the eye lands. That instinct is wrong now. The speed is not the enemy and slowing down everything would waste the shift entirely. The discipline is more specific. Identify the moments that need the question to stay open. Choose where to protect ambiguity, on purpose, so the rest of the loop can move fast without losing its bearings.
Those moments live upstream of where we used to spend our time. In the decisions about what the work is for, not in the work itself. The thinking that used to happen alongside the making now has to happen before it, or it does not happen at all.
The work that gets called considered, in the end, is not the work that resolved fastest. It is the work that was sat with enough to understand what it needed to be. That discipline is harder than it sounds, because it has to be exercised against work that already looks resolved.
The mechanism is starting to live in the design system.
A design system used to be a deliverable. A set of components and tokens. A reference document that designers consulted when they were producing something new.
It is becoming something else. The design system is now the thing the AI generates from. The prompt, the spec, the model. Whoever owns it controls what the company produces at speed. Which means the design system is also the place where the conditions for considered work get established, ahead of time, so the speed of production does not outrun the slowness of the questions worth keeping open.
That is a much harder discipline than reacting to artifacts in the moment. It requires encoding intent into a system before the artifacts exist. Most practices are not built for that yet.
The companies that figure it out first will not be louder. They will be more coherent. Coherence is what the work will be measured by.
The bar went up. I hope we are not missing it.

The discipline now is to keep asking the second question even when the first one is producing the right signals. Not because the speed is the enemy. Because the speed is finally letting us spend time on the part of the work that always needed it most. The space before the answer.
